Philemon Dickinson (April 5, 1739 – February 4, 1809) was an American lawyer and politician from Trenton, New Jersey. As a brigadier general of the New Jersey militia, he was one of the most effective militia officers of the American Revolutionary War. He was also a Continental Congressman from Delaware and a United States Senator from New Jersey. Samuel Meredith Dickinson was born at Trenton, N.J., on June 25, 1839. He studied law until 1861when he entered the military service of New Jersey as a private in the National Guard, and was later discharged to accept an appointment and commission as Paymaster in the United States Navy, assigned to the U.S. Sloop of War "Dale".
